Text Examinations for Full and Basic Membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru are held twice a year, in April and in October.

Candidates may choose to sit the examinations in one of our centres in Aberystwyth, Cardiff or Glynllifon (near Caernarfon).

Examinations

Two examinations, each of 2 hours 5 minutes duration, are held within one examination session:

PAPER 1 – translation from English into Welsh, morning
PAPER 2 – translation from Welsh into English, afternoon

Fees: £105 for sitting one paper and £180 for sitting both papers.
Fees for members: £90 for sitting one paper and £150 for sitting both.

The Full Membership examination requires candidates to translate two texts of approximately 300 words each, as well as a 300 word text during the week in which the examinations are held.

The Basic Membership examination requires candidates to translate two texts of approximately 250 words each.

Candidates may choose to sit one examination into one language only or to sit both papers.

3 October 2020 examinations are cancelled

Unfortunately, it was decided at the end of July 2020 that we had no choice but to cancel the Text Membership Examinations which were scheduled for 3 October 2020. We know this will be a disappointment to many, but because of the current regulations and the uncertainty surrounding the future, we did not feel it would be wise to continue with arrangements despite the easing of some restrictions.

It is our intention and hope to return to our normal arrangements for the examinations in 2021, which is to hold them at the usual examination centres – Aberystwyth, Cardiff and Glynllifon – and on the customary dates in April and the first Saturday in October.

No further announcement about the 2021 Text Membership Examinations will be made until January 2021.
