Text Examinations for Full and Basic Membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru are held twice a year, in April and in October.

Candidates may choose to sit the examinations in one of our centres in Aberystwyth, Cardiff or Glynllifon (near Caernarfon).

Examinations

Two examinations, each of 2 hours 5 minutes duration, are held within one examination session:

PAPER 1 – translation from English into Welsh, morning
PAPER 2 – translation from Welsh into English, afternoon

Fees: £105 for sitting one paper and £180 for sitting both papers.
Fees for members: £90 for sitting one paper and £150 for sitting both.

The Full Membership examination requires candidates to translate two texts of approximately 300 words each, as well as a 300 word text during the week in which the examinations are held.

The Basic Membership examination requires candidates to translate two texts of approximately 250 words each.

Candidates may choose to sit one examination into one language only or to sit both papers.

Text Membership Examinations – 9 October 2021

Only the Text Membership Examinations at Full Membership level will be held on 9 October 2021 at the usual examination centres.

This means that we shall not be offering the opportunity to sit the Text Membership Examinations at Basic Membership level this time. We appreciate that this decision will be a great disappointment to prospective candidates who are eager to sit these examinations.

The arrangements for these examinations will be outlined in ‘Llawlyfr Arholiadau 2021 (Cyflawn)’, the guide to these examinations, which will be published, in Welsh only, on 1 September 2021. From that day, candidates will have until Wednesday, 22 September 2021, by 5pm, to express an interest in sitting the examinations.

Please read the full statement, in Welsh only, regarding these examinations and the proposed plans for 2022.
