Applicants for membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru must succeed in either its text examinations or its interpreting test.

Below is a summary of all three membership categories' entrance requirements.

Full Membership - Text Translation

To become a Full Member candidates must pass the relevant examination*.

Two examinations, each 2 hours 5 minutes duration, are held within one examination session.

PAPER 1 - translation from English into Welsh (two texts approximately 300 words each)
PAPER 2 - translation from Welsh into English (two texts approximately 300 words each)

Applicants for Full Membership also have to translate one text approximately 300 words during the week before the exam is held. Applicants will have 3 days in which to translate this text in their own time.

Successful applicants for Full Membership ensure they will have achieved the appropriate professional level in terms of meaning, register, syntax and accuracy.


Basic Membership - Text Translation

To become a Basic Member candidates must pass the relevant examination*.

Two examinations, each 2 hours 5 minutes duration, are held within one examination session.

PAPER 1 - translation from English into Welsh (two texts approximately 250 words each)
PAPER 2 - translation from Welsh into English (two texts approximately 250 words each)

Successful applicants for Basic Membership ensure they will have achieved the appropriate professional level in terms of meaning, register, syntax and accuracy.


Interpreting Membership

To become an Interpreting Member, candidates must take Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru's interpreting test.

Tests are held in professional audio recording studios. The aim of the test is to, as best as possible, emulate a given situation where interpreting would be required. Candidates are required to interpret two contrasting pieces, each lasting approximately 10 minutes.

Successful applicants for Interpreting Membership ensure that they will have achieved the appropriate professional level in terms of general vocabulary, technical vocabulary, understanding, interpretation and accuracy, register and idiom, syntax, voice register, stamina and technical presentation.


*Candidates may also choose to sit one examination only e.g. translation into Welsh or to sit both examinations. Candidates are not required to achieve a pass mark in both papers in order to apply for membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithu Cymru. If the candidates achieves the required pass mark and his or her membership application accepted, the members' directory will indicate into which language he or she is qualified to translate. Membership levels are also indicated clearly on the Membership Certificate each member receives on payment of his/her's annual subscription.
